HOW TO INCREASE SCHOOL FEES CONSIDERABLY WITHOUT LOOSING STUDENTS

Thanks again for joining in. In part one of this masterclass series, if you followed closely, described summarily but interestingly, how we’d go about increasing your school fees. What we will do before and even after. If you’ve forgotten, let me remind you.
“`So here’s how we will increase your fees seamlessly: we will do some projects (cheap projects), that will add value to your school both for the perception of existing parents and for the perception of parents that are not yours yet. Then when these 2 categories of parents) meet in the vicinity ( trust me, they meet), their discussions about you switches a bit to a new gear. Then when your own parents get back to school (still paying the current fees) they’ll thank you and behave differently to you. They’d be nicer because it’s obvious they’re seeing a greater value than they think they’ve paid for.
Now, we will still not increase your fees immediately, they’d enjoy it for a while. Then just when they’re already expecting it, the increase will come.“`
From the above I will simply highlight today’s learning points
1. Value raiser projects for existing parents
2. Value raiser projects for non-parents
(Note: there’s a difference between the 2)
3. Strategic meetups for both groups
4.The right time for increase
When school owners hear of projects, they immediately sear up their minds thinking it will cost them another spending spree. But if you’ve however read or learnt any skill in project management (go for one if you don’t have any), you know projects do not neccesarily mean building something, or constructing some structure or awarding contracts. Any organized set of events to achieve an organizational aim is a project. This time our project is simply aimed at raising our school’s value in the minds of our parents
A. Now, i will start with what you already know and perhaps already practicing, to what what of course know, but ignoring thinking it doesn’t matter and then to what may not have actually crossed your minds till now.
I don’t need to emphasize the essence of colours, beauty, and creative touches on the appearance of your school, its workrooms and its workforce, no matter how a, big or mega. We overlook many things. Innovation is creating solutions when there seem to be no problem yet. Asking ourselves – is this the best this can be? Can it be better?
It amazes me that we would allow parents visit our schools over and over again and there’s no visible change. Nothing has changed. The gate remains blue, and double-leafed, the windows remain yellow and flower-taped, the reception desk remain marbled and L-shaped, the long corridor flowers remain entirely Cameroon Vicus, Your exercise books have worn the same designs for years, your set of toys have been arranged exactly the same way for so long, You’ve planned and executed your events – PTA, valedictory, Culture, Graduation Inter-house sports – exactly the same way for so long
That everyone seem to be OK with your style does not mean you can’t tweek it. Not because you’re been threatened by any competition, but because you’re continuously positioning to raise value. When you tweek an existing protocol, and make it strike a different cord of impression and paint a fresher colour of perception, you’re certainly on your way yo changing it’s value in the minds of your patners.
Generally, parents thinking is that – why should we pay more when nothing appears to be different than it used to be.
But your own argument is : Don’t they know that the economy had changed? Things are now more expensive…..and all that stuff.
I’d be candid with you. Please stop all that argument, and complaints…increments or additional premium (more money) answers only to value
Now you may say: But I’m adding value to the students now, I’m giving them quality they cannot get elsewhere. Who tells you? If it is quality education, others will give that too. Afterall that’s our primary responsibility. So that is too cheap a basis to demand more. The best thing you can do is to retain the good patents you have and drive up your value so they give you more without having to complain or compare.
YOU CAN’T DEMAND FOR MORE MONEY WHEN YOU HAVE NOT SPENT MORE MONEY
That brings me back to the issue of projects. When we suggest this project, you say its costly, we suggest another one, you say its costly, then what project will not cost you money at all. I bet you many of us know what we went through to build the school estates we have now. Loans and credits here and there. Now tell me, what you charged as fees at your temporary site and what you’re charging now on your permanent elegant structure. Are they the same? The moment the school became more elegant, and excellent, you were confident to up your fees. You got that value because you spent money.
*What matters is not how much you spend, it’s what you spend it on.
Let me give you a rare clue. Before the end of this term. Do a project that will benefit your children so immensely and the parents will not have to pay for it. Next term, do another one and the parents will not have to pay for it. Then come September, increase your fees and see if any parent will complain.
I will give you examples, so you have an idea. It may not work exactly for you, or you may need to adjust it to suit your school
Organize an indoor/outdoor games event. Not particularly inter-house sport (which is of course a value raiser). But it’s still an event on its own. Organize students into various games – ludo, Ayo, scrabble, monopoly, chess, Chinese Go, volley ball, basket ball, karate, swimming, dancing, table -tennis. No athletics and no football. Get some of your friends to motivate children and stir-up the can-do spirit in them. Let there be soft music like – ‘i was built to be the best’ , ‘you raise me up’ , ‘I believe I can fly by R-Kelly’, ‘We are the future’ and The land is green’ by T.Y. Bello and the likes – not the olamides or whizkids or the likes. Create a sensational atmosphere that inspires hardwork and going for excellence. Show movie clips of young heroes.
BUT DON’T CHARGE ANY EXTRA FEE FROM THE PARENTS FOR IT
Now, then let’s also do this. Let’s organize a *Young Minds Leadership Summit* for your secondary school students. Don’t be scared. It’s also an event, it sounds special and expensive, but its not. Get 2 of three of your friends (or simply a consultant like me) , faces your children/staff don’t already know. They will do the leadership talks and take turns. Sandwich the event with presentations from students and even teachers. Set up your hall and again, play light music like the ones suggested earlier. Make it an evening event so there can be lights.
